Acing justice for students

Hi, I’m Rachel and I’m standing for the position of disabled students’ officer

I’m a first-year criminology student and I’m standing for the role of disabled students’ officer as I have a rare condition called anopthalmia as well as a hidden disability. I know all too well how frustrating life can be for students with disabilities. University should be accessible for all and there is a need to put ability back into disability.

There is some great support which we can build upon to make even better but I will fight to change the areas that need improving.

My main focuses for the upcoming year are:

  • raise issues that disabled students feel are pertinent to their studies

  • liaise with staff to improve access for disabled students so that equality can be achieved

  • Push for students to be given extra time for assignments so if any issues rise no one is punished because of their disability.

  • raise university wide awareness of mental health

  • provide a solid platform of social actives to foster community.

  • further promote national campaigns related to exercise, sport and mental health.

Outside of university my passion is playing tennis. Representing Great Britain and standing in the middle of the podium has been the most incredible privilege. It has given me so many opportunities as an athlete to both represent disabled athletes but also to coach future generations of athletes whilst taking into consideration their impairment needs.

I have recently been appointed as a BRIT trust ambassador for international athletes to raise awareness and funds for student mental health organisations.  I am a very honest and open person, I will always have coffee to hand and time for you.

I very much look forward to being your disabled students’ officer
