Student Voice, Student Choice

My name is Rebecca and I am running for the full-time officer position for the schools of Social Sciences and Social Professions; I’m currently in my first year of Social Work and I’m one of my class representatives.

Having been the chair of a charity before, I think I have lots of relevant experience to this sort of role, that I’d love to bring to London Met in this position.

So far, I have tried my best to advocate for students within my student rep role, and as part of this, I’ve spotted some areas I’d love to help improve for London Met as a whole. For myself personally, and for other students too, I’ve found the student support services to be lacking in a time where they are needed most – I think this would be a key priority of mine if I were to step into this role; well-functioning student support services are an essential for any university under normal circumstances, so I was upset to find just 6 sessions of counselling available and not much else, I think other services need to be present, with accommodations made for the accessibility issues that I know many will be facing. If more thought is not put into Student Support I think we should all be concerned for the wellbeing of our fellow students, I will continue to push for positive change in this area regardless of the outcome of this election and I hope other students will too.

Another priority of mine would be to try to figure out better ways to have student voices be heard, I have again tried to raise this issue as a student rep, but I’d love the opportunity to be able to take a bigger part in impacting this change for our department. Student voices should be those that lead change in this university and I believe COVID restrictions have meant this area has suffered – with so many last-minute changes to what is going on in the world around us, it’s imperative students are heard in all of this.

Being someone who is queer and disabled, I’d like to champion accessibility and be involved in continuing to make London Met a safe and accepting place for all students and staff. I’m not afraid of standing up for what is right, and I am so excited at the prospect of being able to make lasting positive change here.

My final priority will just be to listen to the concerns of fellow students! I think with everything being online we can’t all be aware of what is going on other people’s courses, so I’d just want to be here to listen and take the ideas of our department on.

Thank you for your consideration!
