Together We Can!!!

TOGETHER WE CAN!!!!

Who Am I?

Hello, my name is Nancy Barney and I would like to be considered for the role of the Black Asian Minority Ethnicity (BAME) student’s officer in London Met. I am a part-time student studying Health and Social Care. In my previous role as a student ambassador at the University of Hertfordshire, my role included managing and supporting Ethnic Minority students whilst promoting Equality and Diversity. I believe I have transferable skills and experience needed to make this role successful.

Why Me?

I am an energetic person who always has a massive smile on my face. I am deeply rooted in culture, diversity and inclusion; additionally being extremely passionate about food (I love to eat), family and my beliefs. I am also a very hard working individual who likes to get things done. If I were to be elected, my main objectives would be:

1. Empowering students by providing a forum or a platform where we can share ideas, experiences and discuss issues that are commonly present within the BME community. This forum will be to develop and achieve cultural change, promoting equality and prevent unlawful discrimination.

2. Organising multicultural activities, trainings and workshops where individuals and professionals from diverse backgrounds would be able to address and teach students how to tackle differences, bullying, harassment, cultural awareness and resolving conflict.

3. Taking an active role to be available to students, being the main point of contact as well as proactively seeking opportunities to engage and representing BAME interest; serving as a link between the university administration, union and the NUS conferences - working in collaboration to address and act on issues, race, racism and ethnicity.

4. Creating positive change and plan awareness by raising events and activities and a network that provides resources, support and a sense of community for BAME students and liaising with other student societies and subcommittees and officers to promote BAME interests.

Denzel Washington once said “at the end of the day, it is not about what you have or even what you have accomplished. It is about what you have done with those accomplishments. It is about who you have lifted up, who you have made better. It is about what you have given back”. So I say to you, if you want to see a diverse cultural community then vote for me and together we can!!!!
