SHARON FOSTER

THRIVING NOT JUST SURVIVING

Introduction

Hi, my name is Sharon Foster. As a single mum and mature student, I have held a number of different positions within the university which include Student Ambassador, Success Coach, and recently Student Curriculum Partner. I am standing for Vice President of Equity and Welfare. My current positions highlight my passion for representing and supporting students as they all involve working closely with both students and lecturers. This has given me a real insight into issues students face daily and has given me the opportunity to proactively act on their behalf through listening to their issues and concerns. I have been able to provide support, act as a voice for the voiceless in seeking solutions and answers along the student journey. These qualities have enabled me to become an excellent representative for the London Metropolitan University Community.

Why vote for me

As a mature student, a black Christian woman, from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background with a long-term disability I identify with many of the marginalized groups of students here at London Met. While the university provides students from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background the opportunity to study, we also want to thrive not just survive and become successful students who are able to shine and obtain first degrees and opportunities so our lives and those coming behind us can be transformed for the better. I will aid in the fight to reduce the degree-awarding gap for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and those coming from areas of high socioeconomic deprivation as only 57% of Black students achieve first-class or 2.1 degrees compared to 81% of white students. I will fight for a more inclusive and equal university for ALL STUDENTS!

My promise to YOU

Social Justice education:

A more inclusive curriculum that reflects the diversity of students at LMU, that BAME students can identify with and relate to. I will challenge the social and cultural inequality as well as the unequal distribution of opportunities between different groups by working closely with the Student Union, VP of Education, the Student Curriculum Partner Team, Student Services, and lecturers to monitor teaching and learning that will remove barriers to participation for diverse students represented at LMU. As a Success Coach, I currently empower students by using my experience to help them to develop their skills, attitude, and behavior to become successful students.

Student’s welfare:

I will fight for access to adequate welfare provision and support for ALL STUDENTS on and off-campus! I will represent and support students from marginalized groups, such as Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students, students of faith, LGBTQ+ students, women students, trans students, non-binary students, students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, and students with disabilities on issues that concern you as students to enable a dignified, supportive and inclusive university experience irrespective of their background or identity.
