Elections Statement 2026

Elections Paused.

The University have asked us to pause this year’s elections following concerns raised by students regarding the fairness of the process.

As your Students’ Union, listening to and acting on student voice is central to everything we do. We also know how important the student voice is to the University, so this decision has not been taken lightly.

We are currently awaiting further guidance from the University on the next steps. We will share updates with you as soon as they are available.

We are committed to running fair, transparent, and democratic elections, and we appreciate your patience while this matter is thoroughly investigated.

Student voice and representation will continue throughout this period. Our current President and Vice Presidents are still in post, and your School and Course Representatives remain in place and will carry on advocating for your needs, ensuring that student perspectives continue to shape key decisions. As a Students’ Union, we will also continue to review and analyse the most effective ways to support and empower student voice, both during this pause and moving forward.

If you have any questions or wish to raise concerns, please feel free to get in touch with us at studentsunion@londonmet.ac.uk

We expect some questions to include:

Why has this happened?

Concerns were raised by a group of students about the fairness of the current election process. In response, the University requested that we pause the elections. This pause allows us to properly investigate the concerns, ensure full transparency, and make any adjustments needed to uphold a fair and democratic process for all candidates and voters.

When will the election be held?

The revised timeline for the election has not yet been confirmed. We are working with the university to agree next steps, including a revised timeline. We’ll communicate the new dates to all students as soon as further guidance is provided.

Does this mean I can’t stand?

You may still be eligible to stand as a candidate, provided you will be an enrolled student once the elections go ahead. We can’t currently say when that will be. Once the review is complete and a new timeline is confirmed, we’ll publish updated guidance outlining criteria, key dates, and the full application process.

What about the Part-Time Officer positions?

Elections to both Full-Time and Part-Time Officer roles (including student council) have also been paused while the review is underway. This ensures consistency across all elected positions and allows us to address any concerns with the process as a whole. More information about these roles will be shared once the University and Trustee Board have issued further direction. Student Group Leader elections will continue to run as normal, in line with what has already been communicated to those groups.

When will we know more?

We are currently awaiting updates from the University. Although we do not yet have a confirmed timeframe, we’ll provide students with information as soon as it becomes available. Transparency is important to us, and we’ll continue to keep you informed throughout the process.

How will students be represented in the meantime?

Student representation remains in place. Your SU Officers, School and Course Representatives will continue their roles as usual, advocating for your needs, gathering feedback, and ensuring student perspectives are reflected in decision-making. The Students’ Union will also continue exploring the most effective ways to support and strengthen student voice during this period.

Is this change permanent?

No. This pause is a temporary measure to allow for a thorough investigation into concerns raised about the current election process. Once the review is complete, we’ll work with the University and our Trustee Board to implement any necessary changes. Our long-term commitment to supporting strong, diverse, and effective student representation remains unchanged.

Who made this decision?

The decision to pause the elections was made by the University following concerns raised about the fairness of the current process. The Students’ Union is supporting the review to ensure any next steps uphold transparency, integrity, and trust in the democratic process.

Are current officers still in post?

Yes. All current officers will remain in post until the end of this academic year. They will continue to represent students, deliver ongoing work, and support SU activity throughout this period of review.
