Use the key points below to help you get the best out of your social media accounts and raise awareness of your Student Groups, both online and in-person.
Tool Starter Pack
Here are some key apps and tools you may want to use when promoting your student group…
LMSU Website: You can edit your Student Group page to advertise your group to students visiting the website with updates on activities and any other key details. All students can browse the website, see your group and buy a membership, so checking it regularly and sending out mass emails with updates is a great way to engage members!
Native: This is the best website to upload your upcoming events so group members can buy tickets! See the video in the WebLearn training
Canva: This is a great place to design any visual content for the group like posters, social media posts and logos!
Instagram: This is the most popular social media amongst students. Collaborate with us or tag us @lmsustudentcommunities so we can reshare your posts and maximise engagement! (Tip: You can also use Meta Business Suite to schedule upcoming posts for when your followers are most active if you want to be super organised!)
WhatsApp: It is a good idea to set up your Student Group’s group chat on here!
Establish Your Identity!
How do you want to present yourselves to students? Ask yourselves...
“Who are we trying to reach?”
“Why should students want to join us?”
“How can we make students want to join us?”
This may help you establish some content, but for the visual side, consider colour schemes, fonts, and a group logo. Ask yourselves…
“Does this reflect us as a Student Group?”
If the answer is yes, you are now able to create content which looks cohesive and is easily recognisable!
Content
Posting regularly is the best way to keep your members engaged on your social media! A good idea might be to plan these around any upcoming events your Student Group has to help generate the most interest! (e.g. teasers, countdowns, and reminders)
You could create a variety of content to help you achieve this…
· Graphics
· Photos
· Short and long-form videos
· Interviews/Q&As
· Memes
· Stories
· Polls
· Blogs
· Mailing lists via your Student Group page
P.S. Your social media represents your Student Group and therefore LMSU, so make sure all posts are in line with our Code of Conduct here: LMSU-Code-of-Conduct.pdf
In Person Promotion
Aside from your excellent social media posts, in-person promotion gives you an opportunity to reach students who may not already know you exist! You could do this by…
Dropping into lectures: This is great for academic-based groups. Make sure to get permission from the lecturer’s session you’d like to drop into and create a short presentation which directs students to join your Student Group or social media with a QR code.
Handing out leaflets and putting up posters: Email us at studentactivities@londonmet.ac.uk and we can print out your leaflets/posters for you. Make sure to include a QR code on these too! However, do not stick your posters to walls on campus without permission – we can help you to put them up in dedicated areas.
Booking a stall: Try booking a stall at the Rocket around lunchtime. It’s a great opportunity to engage with more students (and hand out your flyers!).
Designing a graphic: Send a graphic 1920x1080px to communications.su@londonmet.ac.uk to be featured on the big screens in the SU!
Planning for the Future
Planning your main activities for the next term and designing a content calendar can help you to create consistent without feeling too overwhelmed!
Make sure your social media pages aren’t lost in the future by sending the log-in details to studentactivities@londonmet.ac.uk. This means we can pass them onto the next committee members and keep your Student Group going!
