ILYAS SAID

A Journey for Change

Most of us join university to improve our chances to get a career but also live a life of fulfilment, a life in which we leave behind a positive contribution.

If you elect me as your Sabbatical Officer of the School of Social Sciences and Social Professions, I will do my best to ensure that you are provided with the best experience during your tenure at London Met.

I will do this based on three core ideas

1-Mental Health – Many students face mental health issues during university life, I have experienced this first hand and have seen friends who have gone through such difficulties. The university has a counselling service which is dedicated to helping students. However, many students wait weeks, at times months to get their first session with one of the trained counsellors. And usually, only get up to eight sessions with their councillors. This is disappointing, no student should be in a helpless situation for weeks.

I will work and contact the relevant authorities to make sure the waiting time is shortened considerably.

2-Student Experience – Your learning experience at the university should not end the moment you leave your lecture, extracurricular activities are vital for most students,

Such as – Continued access to experts who come into the university and give talks to the students, diplomats that students can ask valuable questions such as, how they got into their field of work and what advice they would give them to build up their own careers after university.

I have already done and continue to do this in a smaller way through the Model United Nations Society, which I have served as a vice president and secretary over the past 2 years.

We have taken students to national and international conferences, events attended by UN, and global leaders, visited embassies and invited diplomats and experts to come to our university to speak to our members and London met students in general.

If you elect me as your Sabbatical Officer, I will expand this, using the great relationships I have already built within and outside the university.

3-Student Engagement – Student engagement is vital and I would take the following steps to improve it;

  • Encourage Societies and provide them with clear and accurate information on what the SU can do for them
  • Share personal experience in running an award-winning society
  • Social Sciences + Professions Students Forum. Two meetings a year. One in the beginning of the academic year, to set up a plan. Second one around April to discuss what we have accomplished, came short on, any criticism you may have and how we should move forward.

I realise you expect of us to be honest, sincere to do our best to deliver the promises and policies we are advocating for and that's the reason I honestly believe I'm the best candidate to be your full-time officer for Social Sciences and Social Professions. Thank you for reading and make sure to vote. hopefully for me.
