NANCY BARNEY

Hey!!! My name is Nancy Barney, I am a second-year Health and Social Care student and the current B.A.M.E. officer. I am passionate about inclusivity and an advocate against segregation.

I believe I am the right person for this position because I am easygoing, hard-working, enjoy a good laugh and have the tenacity to fight for change. I have been working closely with the full-time officers to bring change and awareness to students. As a student, I really enjoy talking to different people, acquainting myself and making a positive impact on the well-being of fellow students.

Anybody who knows me knows that I am persistent and energetic. With integrity, my slogan for this campaign is TOGETHER WE CAN!!!. This is because I am a go-getter and I believe that unity is strength.

If elected, I would be committed to engaging with students on a regular basis through organising forums; which would give students the opportunity to make their voices heard and also improve their university experience. A vote for me would also mean working towards:

1. MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING SUPPORT

After taking part in #Movember to raise awareness on men’s mental health, I realised that it can be difficult to know where to access help regarding this matter. I would compile an easy-to-use directory of wellbeing support services that students can use to find internal and external support that suits them and also look to reduce the waiting time that students encounter.

2. B.A.M.E. FORUM

Empower students by providing a forum or a platform where we can share ideas, experiences and discuss issues that are commonly present within the B.A.M.E. community. This forum will be to develop and achieve cultural change, promote equality and prevent unlawful discrimination.

3. FIRST POINT OF CONTACT

Taking an active role to be available to students, being the main point of contact as well as proactively seeking opportunities to engage and represent B.A.M.E. interest; serving as a link between the university administration and students’ union - working in collaboration to address and teach students how to tackle differences, bullying, race, harassment, cultural awareness and resolving conflict.

Remember, TOGETHER WE CAN change the world if we are united.
